Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1924-2018)
was an Indian politician and statesman who served as the Prime Minister of India three times:
first for 13 days in 1996, then for 13 months from 1998 to 1999, and finally for a full term from 1999 to 2004.
Vajpayee was born in Gwalior, India, and was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He was first elected to the Lok Sabha,
the lower house of India's parliament, in 1957 and went on to serve as a member of parliament for over four decades.
He was known for his oratory skills and his ability to build consensus across political lines.
As Prime Minister, Vajpayee oversaw significant economic reforms, including the privatization of state-owned enterprises,
and implemented a number of infrastructure projects, including the Golden Quadrilateral highway network.
He also pursued a policy of rapprochement with Pakistan, making a historic bus journey to Lahore in 1999 to meet with then-Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
Vajpayee was widely respected across the political spectrum in India and was known for his moderate and inclusive approach to governance.
and passed away on August 16, 2018, at the age of 93.
